Harkaway Lionhawk is from some of the best traditional and performance bloodlines in the Irish Draught breed. A maternal grandson of Roma Blue Wind, Hawk is the only Class 1 stallion descended from this renowned mare standing in Ireland. Originally inspected as a three year old in 2004 under the old scoring system, Harkaway Lionhawk received overall marks of 274 out of a possible 300 (including 48 out of 50 for athleticism and 20 out of 20 for temperament), with the following written comment from Irish Draught inspectors Jim Buckley and Fintan Flannelly: "Outstanding". The inspectors compared Hawk to his great great grandsire Blue Peter, commenting that Hawk's smaller size and traditional stamp are reminiscent of top stallions from their youth.
As a sire, Harkaway Lionhawk reliably transmits movement, quality, amateur-friendly temperament, and excellent hoof structure. His near total outcross pedigree also makes him a good option for purebred breeders concerned about genetic diversity in the sport horse sector. His backbreeding and family certainly support him as a potential sire of event horses. One of his colts in the US has already been purchased as an upper level prospect by a 4-star event rider.
Although Harkaway Lionhawk had limited opportunities for competition in the US, what competing he did was with American grand prix rider and former US Nation's Cup team member Aaron Vale. We are looking forward to having him back out showjumping this summer.
