2014 National Awards
Armagh

On Saturday 15th November Irish Draught enthusiasts from across Ireland gathered at the Armagh City Hotel to celebrate the achievements of the Irish Draught Horse at the Irish Draught Horse Breeders Association Awards dinner. The evening was hosted by the Irish Draught Horse Society Northern Ireland who also took the opportunity to honour the successes of their members during the year in front of a national audience.

The achievements of one horse were recognised by both organisations. In August at the Dublin Horse Show, Team Marsh’s Dowdstown Dancer won the 4 & 5 year old Irish Draught Performance Horse class and went on to be Reserve Champion Performance Irish Draught. This success followed just 3 days after he had been crowned Champion Ridden Horse at the IDHBA annual show at a very wet Mullingar and came after successes earlier in the year at the Northern Ireland Festival in Cavan. Not one to rest on his laurels, this horse has more recently been competing successfully in dressage under his regular rider Lynne Ireland and was a worthy winner of Performance Horse Awards presented by both the IDHSNI and the IDHBA.

Other award winners on the night were:
Kenny & Wendy Bell’s Castleview Farmers Lady (IDHSNI Yearling of the Year)
Kenny & Wendy Bell’s Castleview Crannagh Lady (IDHSNI Young Horse of the Year)
Charlotte & Nigel Moore’s Tullys Valley (IDHSNI Broodmare of the Year)
Robert Davis’s Imelda Blue (IDHBA Young Horse of the Year)
Gerard Sweeney’s My Carrick Dolly (IDHBA Broodmare of the Year)
Sean Barker’s Gortfree Hero (IDHBA Show Horse of the Year)
Laura Dooner (IDHBA Young Handler of the Year)
Timmy Sullivan (IDHBA Contribution to the Breed Award)
This last award was made posthumously following the recent death of Timmy Sullivan and was collected on behalf of his family by Eiline Brennan.
